The best Christmas and New Year road trips from Bangalore in 2026 come down to one lucky calendar: Christmas Day is a Friday, and so is New Year's Day 2027. That gives you a three-day Christmas weekend and, if you take 31 December off, a four-day New Year break a week later. December is also the best driving season of the year around Bangalore — the monsoon is long gone, the Western Ghats are green and cool, and coffee country is in harvest. The catch: half of Bangalore has the same plan, homestays sell out weeks ahead, and the city's exits jam up the evening before every holiday. This guide picks the right destination for each weekend — Coorg, Chikmagalur, Mysore and Pondicherry for Christmas, and Gokarna, Wayanad, Hampi and the hills for New Year — with drive times, routes, the New Year's Eve closures to know about, and the timing tips that get you out of Bangalore before the traffic does.
Holiday Calendar 2026 — Your Road Trip Windows
| Holiday | Date | Road trip window | Best trip length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas | 25 Dec 2026 (Fri) | Fri 25 – Sun 27 Dec → 3 days (4 with Thu 24 off) | 2–3 days |
| New Year's Eve | 31 Dec 2026 (Thu) | Leave Thu morning | — |
| New Year's Day | 1 Jan 2027 (Fri) | Thu 31 Dec – Sun 3 Jan → 4 days | 3–4 days, go further |
Christmas is a public holiday in Karnataka. New Year's Day is a holiday at most private companies but not every government office, so confirm with your employer before booking. If you can take Thursday 24 December off, leave that morning — the roads are far emptier than on Christmas Eve evening, when everyone else heads out after work.
Book your stay before you book your car. Coorg and Chikmagalur homestays, Gokarna beach huts and Wayanad resorts are usually full for Christmas and New Year weeks in advance. Once the room is confirmed, lock in your self drive car for the same dates.
Best Christmas Road Trips from Bangalore (25–27 December)
A three-day Christmas weekend suits destinations within five or six hours of the city — far enough to feel like a holiday, close enough that you are not spending a third of the trip driving.
1. Coorg — about 260 km, 5 to 6 hours

Coorg is the classic Bangalore Christmas trip, and December is the best time to go: dry roads, cool nights and coffee estates in harvest season. Take the Bangalore–Mysore expressway, then Hunsur and Kushalnagar to Madikeri. Stop at the Namdroling Golden Temple at Bylakuppe on the way, then spend two days on Raja's Seat at sunset, Abbey Falls, Dubare and a coffee-estate walk at your homestay. Mobile signal and ATMs are patchy outside Madikeri, so carry some cash. For the full route with stops, see our Bangalore to Coorg self drive guide.
2. Chikmagalur — about 245 km, 5 hours

Chikmagalur is Coorg's quieter rival — the birthplace of Indian coffee, with Karnataka's highest peak on its doorstep. Leave via Tumkur Road and Nelamangala, then NH75 through Hassan (stop at Belur and Halebidu if you have time). In Chikmagalur, the big draws are Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri for sunrise views, Hebbe and Jhari falls by jeep, and long coffee-estate walks. December mornings are misty and cold at the top, so pack a jacket.
Mullayanagiri now has an online slot booking system for private vehicles, with daily caps, and recent visitors report that cars may have to stop a few kilometres short of the peak. Holiday slots fill quickly — book your vehicle pass online as soon as your dates are fixed, and check the latest rules from the Chikkamagaluru district administration.
3. Mysore — 145 km, about 2.5 hours
The easiest holiday trip from Bangalore, now just over two hours on the expressway. The cover photo of this post shows why it is worth going at Christmas: the Mysore Palace is lit up with nearly a hundred thousand bulbs on Sundays and public holidays, usually from 7 to 7:45 PM — so both Christmas Day (Friday) and Sunday 27 December are illumination nights. The palace also usually hosts a winter flower show around Christmas and New Year. Add Chamundi Hills in the morning, Brindavan Gardens at KRS Dam, and Srirangapatna on the drive back.
Mysore's palace flower show and illumination timings are announced by the Mysore Palace Board each year. Check the dates before you go — and arrive at the palace grounds by 6:30 PM on illumination nights to find parking.
4. Pondicherry — about 310 km, 6 hours
For a proper Christmas atmosphere, drive east. Pondicherry's churches — the Sacred Heart Basilica and the Immaculate Conception Cathedral — hold packed midnight masses on Christmas Eve, and the French Quarter is decorated for the season. Take Hosur Road to Krishnagiri, then via Tiruvannamalai or Vellore. Leave early: the Silk Board to Electronic City stretch is the slowest part of the whole drive on a holiday morning.
Best New Year Road Trips from Bangalore (31 December – 3 January)
Four days is enough to go further — to the coast, into Kerala, or north to Hampi. Drive out on the morning of the 31st, spend New Year's Eve where you are staying, and drive back on the 3rd.
5. Gokarna — about 480 km, 8 to 9 hours

Gokarna is the beach New Year for people who do not want Goa's crowds and prices. Om Beach, Kudle Beach and Half Moon Beach give you a laid-back New Year's Eve, and the town's temples add another side to the trip. Go via Tumkur Road, Chitradurga and Hubli, or via Shimoga and Jog Falls for a more scenic drive. If you want Goa itself, it is only about 150 km further — see our Bangalore to Goa road trip guide for the stops along the way.
6. Wayanad — about 280 km, 6 to 7 hours

Wayanad combines forest drives, viewpoints and comfortable resorts, all in perfect winter weather. Drive via the Mysore expressway, Gundlupet and the Bandipur and Muthanga forests to Sulthan Bathery and Kalpetta. Spend your days at Edakkal Caves, the Chembra Peak trek (check whether it is open and book with the forest department), Banasura Sagar Dam and Pookode Lake. Read our Karnataka to Kerala self drive guide for the border and permit details.
Night traffic through the Bandipur forest is banned from 9 PM to 6 AM on the routes to Wayanad and Ooty. Cross the forest checkposts well before 9 PM — or, if you leave Bangalore late, stay overnight in Mysore and continue in the morning.
7. Hampi — about 340 km, 6 hours

Hampi is too hot for most of the year, but late December is ideal. Drive NH48 through Tumkur and Chitradurga (stop at the fort), then on to Hosapete. Two full days cover the Virupaksha Temple, Hemakuta Hill at sunset, the Vittala Temple and its stone chariot, the Royal Enclosure and a coracle ride on the Tungabhadra. Start sightseeing early — the monuments are spread out and the afternoon sun is strong even in winter.
8. Nandi Hills — 60 km, 1.5 hours (but not on New Year's Eve)

Nandi Hills is Bangalore's favourite sunrise drive, and December and January give the best chance of the famous sea of clouds. But do not plan New Year's Eve here: the Chikkaballapur district administration has closed Nandi Hills to tourists on 31 December every recent year, usually from the afternoon or evening until 1 January. Go on the morning of Saturday 2 or Sunday 3 January instead. Leave the city by 4:30 AM via Bellary Road to reach the gate before sunrise.
Pick Your Trip by Length
| Trip length | Destination | Distance | Drive time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morning trip | Nandi Hills | 60 km | 1.5 hrs | Sunrise on 2–3 Jan, couples |
| 1 night | Mysore | 145 km | 2.5 hrs | Families, palace illumination |
| 2 nights | Chikmagalur | 245 km | 5 hrs | Coffee estates, sunrise peaks |
| 2 nights | Coorg | 260 km | 5–6 hrs | Homestay Christmas, families |
| 2–3 nights | Wayanad | 280 km | 6–7 hrs | Forests, groups, resorts |
| 2 nights | Pondicherry | 310 km | 6 hrs | Christmas mass, French Quarter |
| 2–3 nights | Hampi | 340 km | 6 hrs | Heritage, photography |
| 3 nights | Gokarna | 480 km | 8–9 hrs | Beach New Year, friends |
How to Beat Holiday Traffic Leaving Bangalore
Getting out of Bangalore is the hardest part of any holiday road trip. On the evening before a long weekend, every exit from the city slows to a crawl — a drive that normally clears the city in an hour can take three.
- Leave before 6 AM on the first holiday morning. By 8 AM the exits are already filling up.
- Mysore, Coorg, Wayanad and Ooty: take the Bangalore–Mysore expressway (NH275). It is tolled but saves well over an hour.
- Chikmagalur, Hampi and Gokarna: leave on Tumkur Road (NH48). The stretch to Nelamangala is the bottleneck — clear it before 7 AM.
- Pondicherry: Hosur Road through Silk Board and Electronic City is slow at almost any time. Go very early, or use the elevated expressway to Electronic City.
- Return before 2 PM on the last day. Sunday-evening traffic back into the city on a long weekend is as bad as the Friday exodus.
- Fill fuel and check your FASTag balance before you leave — queues at toll plazas are longest on holiday mornings.
New Year's Eve Rules and Safety Tips
- In Bangalore city, police usually close roads around MG Road, Brigade Road and Church Street to vehicles on New Year's Eve, and many flyovers are shut overnight. If you are celebrating in the city, take the metro or a cab and leave the car parked.
- Police run heavy drunk-driving checks across Bangalore and on highways on 31 December night. If you are celebrating, do not drive — stay where you party.
- Popular hilltops near Bangalore, including Nandi Hills, have been closed to tourists on New Year's Eve in recent years. Check local news before planning an outdoor celebration.
- Ghat roads: early-morning fog is common in December on the Chikmagalur, Coorg and Wayanad ghats. Use low beams, keep your distance and avoid driving the ghats after dark.
- Carry your driving licence, keep your booking details on your phone, and save the 24/7 support number before you leave the city.
