Most people who have driven Chennai to Coimbatore will tell you the same thing — they did not expect the road to be that good. NH44 from Chennai to Salem is genuinely one of the best-maintained 4-lane highways in Tamil Nadu. The NHAI has done serious work on this corridor over the last three years and it shows. No surprise potholes. No single-lane bottlenecks for 300 km straight. You can set cruise control at 100 kmph and watch Tamil Nadu unfold — flat red-earth farmland outside Chennai, the rocky outcrops around Krishnagiri, the slow greening as you approach Erode, then the Western Ghats foothills starting to pile up on the horizon as you get close to Coimbatore. This guide covers everything you actually need for the drive — the right route, the real fuel costs, the stops worth making and the ones that are not, and which car handles this 510 km stretch best.

The Route — NH44 to Salem, Then NH544 to Coimbatore
Leave Chennai on NH44 heading southwest. The first 50 km through Sriperumbudur, Walajapet and Ranipet is the slowest part of the entire drive — this stretch has the most traffic lights and the most truck traffic feeding into the Chennai-Bengaluru corridor. Once you cross Vellore and hit open highway, the road opens up completely. By Krishnagiri (230 km from Chennai) you are in pure highway rhythm.
At Salem (340 km), NH44 continues north toward Bengaluru. You leave NH44 here and join NH544 — the Salem-Kochi highway that runs southwest through Erode, Tiruppur and into Coimbatore before continuing to Palakkad and Kochi. NH544 is also 4-lane for the entire Tamil Nadu stretch and equally well-maintained. The route through Erode crosses the Kaveri River on a dedicated bridge — one of the best river views on the whole drive. Tiruppur (460 km) is the last major town before Coimbatore. From Tiruppur the highway bypasses the city through a dedicated corridor with grade-separated interchanges built by NHAI under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. You enter Coimbatore without going through the textile town traffic.
Leave Chennai by 5:30 AM. You hit the Krishnagiri stretch before truck traffic builds, reach Salem by 10 AM for breakfast, cross Erode by noon, and arrive Coimbatore by 2 PM — with full daylight left to explore the city.

Best Stops on Chennai to Coimbatore Route
This is not a route with many tourist-grade stops - it is primarily a highway drive through Tamil Nadu's industrial heartland. But there are 4 stops genuinely worth making. Here they are honestly assessed:
1. Krishnagiri - 230 km | Breakfast stop
Krishnagiri is the natural breakfast break — roughly 3.5 hours from Chennai and well-positioned before the busier Salem section. The town sits right on NH44 and has multiple A2B and Saravana Bhavan restaurants serving fresh South Indian breakfast. Krishnagiri is also the mango capital of Tamil Nadu — if you are driving between March and June the highway-side mango stalls near Krishnagiri sell Neelam, Banganapalli and Imam Pasand varieties for ₹60-100/kg, far better quality than Chennai markets. Worth a quick 20-minute stop. Krishnagiri Reservoir is 5 km off the highway if you want a nature break.
2. Hogenakkal Falls - 30 km detour from Dharmapuri | Only if you have time
Hogenakkal is the 'Niagara of India' — a waterfall on the Kaveri River where the river crashes through black rocky gorges before entering the Tamil Nadu plains. It is a 30 km detour from Dharmapuri off NH44 and genuinely spectacular during high-water months (July to November). In summer (April-June) the water level is lower but the coracle boat rides through the gorge are still excellent. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) manages the boat rides at ₹150 per person. Add 2 hours for this detour. Not worth it if you are running late or visiting in peak summer when the gorge is dry.
3. Salem - 340 km | Lunch and fuel
Salem is the midpoint and the best lunch stop. The city is famous for Salem Samba rice, Salem chicken curry, and the best highway dhabas in this part of Tamil Nadu. Sri Krishna Inn on NH44 before Salem city is consistently recommended by regular Chennai-Coimbatore drivers for its vegetarian meals. Salem Steel Plant (a Steel Authority of India Limited facility) is visible from the highway — one of South India's largest integrated steel plants and an interesting industrial landmark. Fill fuel in Salem — the stretch between Salem and Erode has fewer stations.
4. Erode - 420 km | Bhavani Sangamam
Erode is where the Kaveri, Bhavani and Amudha rivers meet at a point called Bhavani Sangamam — a sacred Triveni Sangam similar in significance to Prayagraj's Triveni. The Sangameshwarar Temple at the confluence is one of the oldest Shiva temples in the Erode district. It is 8 km off the highway but takes only 20 minutes to visit. The main highway bridge over the Kaveri near Erode is also the most photogenic section of the entire drive — pull over at the bridge viewpoint if you want a clean landscape shot. Erode is also India's largest turmeric trading hub — the Erode turmeric market near the town centre is active on weekday mornings if you are curious.

Best Self Drive Cars for Chennai to Coimbatore
A 510 km highway drive is fundamentally different from a city drive or a ghat road drive. What you need here is highway stability, comfortable seating for 7-8 hours, and fuel efficiency over a long distance. These are the three best choices from MM Miles:
The best choice for a family or group of 5-7. The 2.8L diesel engine is completely at ease at highway speeds — it actually gets better at 100 kmph than in city traffic. The suspension absorbs the minor road imperfections between Krishnagiri and Salem that smaller cars feel. 7 seats means no one is cramped after 8 hours. Diesel efficiency at highway speeds: 14-16 kmpl.
View Toyota Fortuner →Best for a group of 4. The 1.5L diesel Creta is genuinely excellent on this route — highway-stable, comfortable seats and 18-20 kmpl at cruising speed means your fuel bill is low. Compact enough to navigate Coimbatore city once you arrive. The most popular MM Miles car for Chennai-Coimbatore runs.
View Hyundai Creta →Best for comfort over everything. If you are driving with elderly family members or want the most relaxed 8-hour drive possible, the Crysta's seats and suspension make a real difference. Its 2.4L diesel engine is smooth at 100 kmph for hours without strain. 7 seats, massive legroom, and the trunk fits more luggage than any other car in this category.

Coimbatore is seriously underrated as a destination. Most people treat it as a transit city before Ooty or Munnar but the city itself has enough for a full 2-day visit. The Isha Yoga Center at Poondi — 30 km from the city — is one of the most architecturally remarkable spiritual spaces in India. The Dhyanalinga meditation hall at its centre is free to visit, open daily from 6 AM to 8 PM. The Adiyogi Shiva statue (112-feet tall, the world's largest bust sculpture as per Guinness World Records) is on the same campus and open to the public. The Arulmigu Mariamman Teppakulam temple in the city centre is a beautiful example of Dravidian temple architecture maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Tamil Nadu.
For food, Coimbatore has a distinct cuisine different from Chennai - heavier use of coconut, different spice profiles, and excellent local breakfasts. Annapoorna on East Arokiasamy Road and Royal Hindu Hotel on Nehru Street are both institutions that have been feeding Coimbatoreans for decades. For the textile shopping that Coimbatore is famous for, the RS Puram area and Gandhipuram market have the best selection of cotton and home textiles directly from Tiruppur mills at factory prices.

Practical Tips Before You Drive
- Leave Chennai before 6 AM on weekdays — the NH44 stretch near Sriperumbudur and Walajapet has heavy industrial traffic between 7 AM and 10 AM that adds 45-60 minutes
- Fill fuel in Chennai before leaving — petrol in Chennai is marginally cheaper than highway stations; do not fill at highway pumps unless under a quarter tank
- The Salem bypass on NH44 saves 25 minutes versus going through Salem city — stay on the bypass unless stopping for lunch
- Between Erode and Tiruppur there is a 15 km stretch with heavy textile industry trucks — maintain 80 kmph and do not attempt to overtake on curves
- Coimbatore city traffic is busiest between 8-10 AM and 5-7 PM — if arriving in these windows take the NHAI bypass ring road rather than entering through RS Puram
- Download offline Google Maps for the entire route before leaving — Jio and Airtel signals can drop near Dharmapuri forest sections
- Carry an emergency kit: one litre of water per person, basic medicines, a torch, and your car documents including insurance — Tamil Nadu Traffic Police checkposts on NH44 are frequent and document verification is standard
- Speed limit on NH44 and NH544 is 100 kmph for cars — speed cameras are active near Krishnagiri, Salem and the Coimbatore bypass interchanges
