There are more places to visit near Chennai within 100 km than most people realise — and every one of them works as a one-day trip by car. Head down the coast and you have a heritage village, a crocodile park, surfing beaches, UNESCO monuments and a Dutch fort on the sand. Head west and you reach Kanchipuram's 1,300-year-old temples and India's oldest bird sanctuary. Head north and you find Pulicat, a vast lagoon that fills with flamingos and pelicans in winter. This guide lists 16 places within roughly two hours of the city, grouped by the road you take to get there, with distances, drive times, the days each one is closed, and three ready-made one-day itineraries — so you can leave at 7 AM and be home for dinner.

Along the Coast: East Coast Road (ECR)
ECR is the most popular day-trip road from Chennai — a two-lane coastal highway lined with beaches, resorts and seafood shacks. These six stops sit one after another, so you can combine three or four of them in a single day.
1. DakshinaChitra — 35 km, about 1 hour

DakshinaChitra is a living-history museum at Muttukadu where traditional houses from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have been taken apart and rebuilt, complete with their furniture and tools. Weavers, potters and craftspeople work on site, and there are puppet shows and folk performances on many days. Allow two to three hours. It is closed on Tuesdays, so plan your ECR day around that.
2. Madras Crocodile Bank — 40 km, about 1 to 1.25 hours
The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust is one of the largest reptile parks in the world, with thousands of crocodiles, alligators, gharials, turtles and snakes. It is a research and conservation centre as much as a zoo, and the shaded paths make it comfortable even on a warm day. It is closed on Mondays. Visit in the morning, when the reptiles are most active, and allow about two hours.
3. Kovalam (Covelong) Beach — 40 km, about 1 hour
Kovalam — also called Covelong — is a fishing village with a wide, clean beach and Chennai's best-known surf spot. Surf schools offer beginner lessons for those who want to try, and the beach is far quieter than Marina or Elliot's. The sea here can be rough, so swim only where the surf schools or lifeguards say it is safe.
4. Mahabalipuram — 57 km, about 1.5 hours

The best single day trip from Chennai. Mahabalipuram's 7th and 8th-century Pallava monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Shore Temple, the Five Rathas carved from single rocks, Arjuna's Penance — one of the largest open-air rock reliefs in the world — and Krishna's Butter Ball balanced on a slope. Stop at the Tiger Cave at Saluvankuppam, a few kilometres before the town. One ticket covers the main monuments; buy it online to skip the queue. For the full ECR route, see our Chennai to Pondicherry self drive guide.
See the open-air monuments early in the morning or after 3:30 PM, when the stone is not too hot to walk on barefoot at the temples. Finish with sunset at the Shore Temple.
5. Sadras Dutch Fort — 70 km, about 1.75 hours

Few people stop at Sadras, about 15 km past Mahabalipuram near Kalpakkam. The Dutch built a trading fort here in the 17th century, and its walls, granary, elephant stables and a small cemetery with carved Dutch tombstones still stand beside the sea. It takes under an hour to explore and is almost always quiet — a good contrast to crowded Mahabalipuram.
6. Mudaliarkuppam Boat House — 95 km, about 2 to 2.25 hours
Near the end of the 100 km circle, Tamil Nadu Tourism's boat house at Mudaliarkuppam offers motor boat and speed boat rides through the backwaters to a sandbar beach on the sea. It makes a relaxed end-point for an ECR day. The ruins of Alamparai Fort are just a few kilometres further south if you want one more stop.
Off OMR: Thiruporur
7. Thiruporur Kandaswamy Temple — 45 km, about 1.25 hours
The Kandaswamy Temple at Thiruporur is one of the best-known Murugan temples near Chennai, with a large temple tank and a quieter atmosphere than the big city temples. It sits on OMR, so it combines easily with Kovalam beach: cross over from ECR at Kelambakkam.
Towards Kanchipuram: Temples and Bird Sanctuaries
West and south-west of Chennai, along NH48 and GST Road, are some of the oldest temples in Tamil Nadu and two of its best bird sanctuaries. This side works best as an early-start day: birds at dawn, temples in the late morning, silk shopping after lunch.
8. Vandalur Zoo (Arignar Anna Zoological Park) — 32 km, about 1 hour
One of the largest zoos in India, set in forest on the southern edge of the city. Lions, tigers, elephants and a lion safari make it an easy half-day with children. It is closed on Tuesdays. The park is big, so arrive at opening time and use the battery cars to save walking.
9. Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary — 85 km, about 2 hours
Vedanthangal is India's oldest bird sanctuary, protected by local villagers for centuries. From November to February, thousands of painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, open-billed storks, egrets and cormorants nest in the trees in the middle of the lake. Arrive at sunrise for the best activity, and bring binoculars. Outside the season there is little to see, so time your visit for the winter months and check timings locally before going.
10. Karikili Bird Sanctuary — 80 km, about 2 hours
Close to Vedanthangal, Karikili is a smaller, much less crowded sanctuary with a similar mix of waterbirds in winter. Visit both on the same morning — Karikili first if you want quiet, Vedanthangal first if you want the bigger spectacle.
11. Uthiramerur — 90 km, about 2 to 2.25 hours
Uthiramerur is a small town with a big place in history. Inscriptions from the Chola period on the walls of its Vaikunta Perumal temple describe how the village elected its local councils by drawing names from a pot — one of the earliest records of village elections in India. The Sundaravarada Perumal temple here is also worth seeing. It sits on the route between Vedanthangal and Kanchipuram.
12. Kanchipuram — 75 km, about 2 hours

Kanchipuram is called the city of a thousand temples, and four of them make a perfect day: the 8th-century Kailasanathar Temple with its sandstone carvings, the Ekambareswarar Temple with its huge gopuram and ancient mango tree, the Kamakshi Amman Temple, and the Varadharaja Perumal Temple. Then shop for Kanchipuram silk sarees directly from the weavers' societies. Take the Bangalore highway (NH48) from Chennai; the drive is straightforward.
Most Kanchipuram temples close for a few hours in the early afternoon, typically from around 12:30 PM to 4 PM. Plan temples for the morning and evening and shop or eat in between. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered.
North of Chennai and the Andhra Border
13. Pulicat Lake — 60 km, about 1.5 to 2 hours

Pulicat is the second-largest brackish-water lagoon in India, stretching across the Tamil Nadu–Andhra border. In winter it is one of the best places near Chennai to see flamingos, pelicans and huge flocks of waders. Local fishermen take visitors out by boat from Pulicat village — agree the price before you set off. In the village, the 17th-century Dutch cemetery has some beautifully carved tombstones. Drive via Ponneri, and go early in the morning for the best light and the most birds.
14. Tada (Ubbalamadugu) Falls — 90 km, about 2 hours
Just across the border in Andhra Pradesh, Tada Falls (also called Ubbalamadugu) is reached by a forest walk from the parking area, with natural pools along the way. It is at its best after the monsoon, from November to January. Wear proper shoes, start early and avoid the falls after heavy rain, when the stream can rise quickly.
15. Nagalapuram Falls — 85 km, about 2 to 2.5 hours
Nagalapuram is a favourite with Chennai's trekking groups: a full-day hike through a forested valley to a series of rock pools and small waterfalls. It is a proper trek, not a stroll — go with an experienced group or guide, check forest department rules before you go, and avoid it in heavy rain.
Tada and Nagalapuram are in Andhra Pradesh. Interstate travel in a rental car can involve border permits or entry tax. Tell MM Miles your route when you book so you know what applies.
16. Thiruvallur and Poondi Reservoir — 60 km, about 1.5 hours
West of the city, Thiruvallur's Veeraraghava Perumal Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams sacred to Vaishnavites. Continue to Poondi Reservoir, one of Chennai's main water sources, for an open, peaceful spot with views across the water — best in the evening after the monsoon has filled it.

Tips for Day Trips from Chennai
- Leave by 6 or 7 AM. Chennai's exits — GST Road at Tambaram, OMR and the ECR start at Thiruvanmiyur — slow down sharply after 8:30 AM.
- Check closed days: DakshinaChitra and Vandalur Zoo close on Tuesdays, the Crocodile Bank on Mondays.
- Carry cash for small entry fees, parking, boat rides and roadside food — not every stop takes cards or UPI reliably.
- Carry water and sun protection. Even in winter, the afternoon sun on ECR and in the temple courtyards is strong.
- In November, check the northeast monsoon forecast before heading to the coast or the waterfalls.
- Keep your FASTag recharged — there are toll plazas on ECR, NH48 and GST Road.
