Two cities drive to the same hill station by completely different roads — and both are worth talking about separately. If you are driving from Bangalore, you take NH275 through Mysore, enter the dense teak forest of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, watch for elephants near Mudumalai, and then climb 36 hairpin bends on the Kalhatti Ghat to arrive in Ooty. If you are driving from Chennai, you take NH44 past Krishnagiri and Salem, navigate through Coimbatore, and climb the Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Ooty ghat on NH181 — also 36 bends, different scenery. The Bangalore route is shorter at 270 km but takes you through a national park with genuine wildlife. The Chennai route is longer at 575 km but has better highway infrastructure. Both are spectacular. This guide covers everything you need to know for both.
Route 1 — Bangalore to Ooty via Mysore and Bandipur
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Distance | 270 km via NH275 |
| Drive time | 6 to 7 hours |
| Key roads | NH275 (Bangalore-Mysore Expressway) + Forest road + Kalhatti Ghat |
| Wildlife zones | Bandipur Tiger Reserve + Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary |
| Speed limit in forest | 40 kmph strictly enforced |
| Night driving restriction | No vehicles in Bandipur 9 PM to 6 AM |
| Ghat section | Masinagudi to Ooty — 36 hairpin bends, Kalhatti Ghat |
| Ooty entry permit | Required — issued at Masinagudi checkpost |
| Best departure time | 5:30 AM to 6:00 AM from Bangalore |
| Fuel stop | Fill full tank at Gundlupet before forest entry |
Leave Bangalore on the Bangalore-Mysore Expressway — a 4-lane divided highway that covers the 140 km to Mysore in under 2 hours. Ramanagara (50 km) is the filming location of Sholay and has distinctive rocky granite outcrops visible from the highway. Channapatna (60 km) is famous for lacquered wooden toys — the roadside stalls are worth a 10-minute stop if you have children. Mandya (100 km) is Karnataka's sugar capital and a good fuel stop. Mysore (140 km) — at this point you have a choice. Stop at Mysore Palace for 45 minutes or push straight through on the Mysore bypass. If it is your first time in Mysore, stop. The Amba Vilas Palace commissioned by Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV is genuinely one of India's most remarkable buildings.
From Mysore continue through Nanjangud and Gundlupet. Fill a complete tank at Gundlupet — there are no fuel stations inside Bandipur and very limited options until Masinagudi. At Gundlupet you enter the Karnataka Forest Department buffer zone. The road enters Bandipur Tiger Reserve a few kilometres later. This is where the drive changes completely.
Leave Bangalore before 6 AM. You reach Bandipur by 9-10 AM — the best window for wildlife sightings when elephants and deer are active near the road. Never drive through Bandipur after 9 PM — the night driving ban is strictly enforced and you will be held at the checkpost until 6 AM.

Bandipur and Mudumalai — The Rules That Actually Matter
Bandipur Tiger Reserve is managed by the Karnataka Forest Department and is one of India's most important Project Tiger reserves with an estimated population of 170+ tigers. Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary immediately follows Bandipur across the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border and is managed by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. The two reserves together form a continuous wildlife corridor of over 1,500 sq km. The forest road through both reserves is approximately 40 km long.
- Speed limit 40 kmph throughout both reserves — forest department patrol vehicles and speed cameras are active
- Night driving prohibition: no private vehicles between 9 PM and 6 AM in Bandipur — plan to cross before sunset
- Windows up while driving through the reserve — never put hands or cameras outside windows when wildlife is near
- No honking inside the forest — this is a legal requirement under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972
- If an elephant is on the road — stop completely, switch off headlights, wait for it to cross. Never honk or rev the engine
- No stopping inside the reserve except at designated checkposts — Theppakadu and Mudumalai have designated rest areas
- Download offline maps at Gundlupet — mobile signal is completely absent through most of Bandipur forest
- Carry RC book, driving licence and valid insurance — forest checkposts at both entry and exit verify documents
The Kalhatti Ghat — 36 Bends from Masinagudi to Ooty
After Mudumalai you reach Masinagudi town — the last flat section before Ooty. The Ooty entry permit is checked here at the Masinagudi forest checkpost before you start the Kalhatti Ghat ascent. The Kalhatti Ghat road from Masinagudi to Ooty climbs from approximately 900 metres to 2,240 metres over 30 km through 36 numbered hairpin bends. The road is steeper than the Mettupalayam-Ooty ghat from the Chennai side — several bends require first and second gear even in modern cars. A March 2026 Team-BHP travelogue confirmed the NA engine in a fully loaded car had to manage all hairpins in first and second gear on this route. Diesel SUVs with torquier engines handle this significantly better.
The Kalhatti Ghat is a one-way road for vehicles coming up from Masinagudi. Downhill traffic (Ooty to Masinagudi) uses a different alignment. However some local vehicles use the uphill road coming down — drive carefully and always stay left. Never attempt this ghat after 5 PM when mist reduces visibility and the road gets wet.

Route 2 — Chennai to Ooty via NH44 and Mettupalayam Ghat
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Distance | 575 km via NH44 + NH181 |
| Drive time | 9 to 10 hours |
| Key roads | NH44 (Chennai-Salem) + NH544 (Salem-Coimbatore) + NH181 (Mettupalayam-Ooty) |
| Breakfast stop | Krishnagiri (230 km) — 3.5 hrs from Chennai |
| Lunch stop | Salem (340 km) or Coimbatore (500 km) |
| Fuel stop | Mettupalayam — last station before ghat |
| Ghat section | Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor — 40 km, 36 hairpin bends |
| Best departure time | 5:00 AM to 5:30 AM from Chennai |
| Nilgiri Mountain Railway | UNESCO World Heritage — runs parallel to ghat road |
The Chennai to Ooty route is longer but operates on better highway infrastructure — NH44 is a 4-lane divided highway for most of the 340 km to Salem. Leave Chennai before 5:30 AM to clear the Sriperumbudur industrial corridor before truck traffic builds. Krishnagiri at 230 km is your breakfast stop. Salem at 340 km is your leave-NH44 point — join NH544 here heading southwest toward Coimbatore. After Coimbatore, join NH181 at Mettupalayam for the ghat ascent. The Mettupalayam-Ooty ghat on NH181 is less steep than the Kalhatti Ghat from Masinagudi — 36 bends over 40 km with a more gradual gradient. The UNESCO World Heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs parallel to the road through Hillgrove and Coonoor — you may see the steam train ascending alongside your car.

Bangalore Route vs Chennai Route — Which One Should You Take?
| Factor | Bangalore via Bandipur | Chennai via Mettupalayam |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | 270 km | 575 km |
| Drive time | 6-7 hours | 9-10 hours |
| Highway quality | Mixed — expressway + forest road | Excellent — 4-lane NH44 most of the way |
| Wildlife factor | High — Bandipur + Mudumalai | None until ghat |
| Night driving restriction | Yes — Bandipur 9PM-6AM | No restriction |
| Ghat steepness | Steeper — Kalhatti Ghat | Moderate — NH181 |
| Scenic factor | Wildlife forest + ghat | Highway + Nilgiri ghat |
| Best for | Adventure + wildlife experience | Comfortable family long drive |
If you are driving from Bangalore, the Mysore-Bandipur route is the obvious choice — 270 km versus 575 km from Chennai. There is no reason for a Bangalore traveller to take the longer NH44 route through Krishnagiri. For Chennai travellers, the Mettupalayam route is the only practical option — the Kalhatti Ghat requires reaching Masinagudi from the Karnataka side which adds significant distance from Chennai.
Best Self Drive Cars for Ooty from Bangalore and Chennai
The best choice for the Bangalore-Bandipur-Kalhatti route specifically. The 2.8L diesel handles the steep Kalhatti Ghat climbs in second gear without strain. High ground clearance is an advantage on Bandipur forest roads that can have debris and uneven sections. 7 seats for family groups and the commanding height helps spot wildlife from the road.
View Toyota Fortuner →Best for the Chennai-NH44-Mettupalayam route. Excellent fuel efficiency at 17-19 kmpl on long NH44 highway sections reduces the fuel cost on the 575 km drive significantly. Ground clearance is adequate for the Mettupalayam ghat and the car is compact enough to navigate Ooty town's narrow roads comfortably.
View Hyundai Creta →Best monsoon choice for both routes. ADAS safety features add real confidence on misty ghat roads in July-September. The diesel engine delivers exceptional torque on both the steep Kalhatti Ghat from Masinagudi and the sustained NH181 ghat from Mettupalayam. Best all-weather, all-season choice for Ooty.

Park near the Government Botanical Garden — the largest public parking area in the town centre. The Botanical Garden itself, maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department, covers 55 acres with terraced beds, a 20-million-year-old fossilised tree trunk and over 650 plant species. The annual Flower Show in May draws visitors from across Tamil Nadu. Doddabetta Peak at 2,637 metres is 9 km from town — the highest point in the Nilgiris with a telescope observatory. On clear mornings the Coimbatore plains are visible 2,000 metres below. The Ooty Lake, a 65-acre artificial reservoir built by John Sullivan in 1824, has pedal boats and rowboats. Pykara Dam and Falls — 19 km from Ooty — is worth the afternoon drive through shola forest. The Todas, an indigenous community of the Nilgiris, have settlements near Pykara that are among the few surviving examples of Toda architecture in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
Practical Tips for Both Routes
- Bangalore route: fill full tank at Gundlupet — no fuel in Bandipur forest for 60+ km
- Chennai route: fill full tank at Mettupalayam — no fuel stations on NH181 ghat until Coonoor
- Both routes: carry RC book, driving licence and valid motor insurance — checkposts on both ghat roads verify documents
- Ooty entry permit is checked at Kalhatti checkpost for Bangalore route — issued free at Masinagudi
- Download offline Google Maps before leaving — zero signal in Bandipur forest and patchy signal on both ghat roads
- Drive at 20-30 kmph on all ghat bends — honk before every blind corner
- Avoid both ghat roads after 5 PM — mist and fading light make navigation difficult
- Engine braking on descent — engage second gear from the top of ghat, do not ride brakes
- Ooty town roads are very narrow — the Fortuner and XUV700 require patience in the market area
- Book accommodation in advance for April-May weekends — Ooty fills up and prices spike significantly
