The best Diwali and New Year road trips from Chennai in 2026 are the ones you plan around the calendar — and this year the calendar is generous. Deepavali falls on the weekend of 7–8 November. Christmas Day is a Friday. New Year's Day 2027 is also a Friday. That is three festive long weekends in under two months, each one long enough for a proper self drive getaway. The catch: half of Chennai has the same idea, the northeast monsoon is still active through November, and the roads out of the city jam up the evening before every holiday. This guide picks the right destination for each weekend — short coastal trips for a rainy Deepavali, temple towns and quiet beaches for Christmas, and cool hill stations for New Year — with drive times, routes and the timing tips that get you out of Chennai before the traffic does.
Festive Season 2026 Calendar — Your Road Trip Windows

| Karthigai Deepam | 24 Nov 2026 (Tue) | Day trip or one night | 1–2 days |
| Christmas | 25 Dec 2026 (Fri) | Fri 25 – Sun 27 Dec → 3 days | 2–3 days |

Tamil Nadu celebrates Deepavali on the morning of Naraka Chaturdashi — the early oil bath, new clothes and crackers at dawn. Calendars differ on whether that falls on 7 or 8 November in 2026, so confirm the official holiday before you book leave. Most families spend Deepavali morning at home, which makes the afternoon of Deepavali day — or the day after — the best time to set off. Roads are noticeably emptier then than on the evening before the festival.
November is the peak of the northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu, and cyclone alerts are possible in November and December. Check the IMD forecast the night before any trip. If there is an orange or red alert for the coast, swap ECR destinations for inland ones like Yelagiri or Tiruvannamalai — or move the trip by a day.
Best Deepavali Road Trips from Chennai (7–8 November)
Deepavali trips work best short and close. The festival itself takes up a morning, the weather is unpredictable, and you want to be home in time for the return-to-work Monday. These four destinations all sit within four hours of the city.
1. Mahabalipuram — 57 km, about 1.5 hours

The easiest festive getaway from Chennai. Leave after your Deepavali morning at home, drive down ECR and you are at the Shore Temple, Five Rathas and Arjuna's Penance by lunch. The UNESCO monuments are compact enough to see in an afternoon, and the beachfront seafood shacks stay busy through the festival. If you go in late December instead, you may catch the Indian Dance Festival — Tamil Nadu Tourism usually holds it at Mahabalipuram from late December into January, with classical dance performances against the monuments in the evenings. Dates are announced closer to the event, so check before you go.
2. Pondicherry — 150 km, about 3 to 3.5 hours

Pondicherry is the default festive road trip from Chennai, and for good reason: a straight, scenic run down ECR, a walkable French Quarter, and enough cafés and beaches for a relaxed two days. Over Deepavali it is livelier than usual but still manageable. Combine it with Mahabalipuram on the way down for a three-day loop. For the full route guide with stops, see our Chennai to Pondicherry self drive post.
Beach Road (Goubert Avenue) in Pondicherry is usually closed to vehicles in the evenings so people can walk the promenade. Park in the French Quarter side streets or at your hotel and walk — circling for parking near the beach wastes an hour on busy nights.
3. Yelagiri — 230 km, about 4 hours
If the coast has rain alerts, head inland. Yelagiri is a small, quiet hill station off NH48 near Vaniyambadi, reached by a ghat road with 14 hairpin bends. It is cooler than Chennai, much less crowded than Ooty or Kodaikanal, and ideal for a two-day family Deepavali: Punganoor Lake, the Swamimalai hill trek, and the viewpoints on the ghat road. Accommodation is limited, so book your stay before you book anything else.
4. Tiruvannamalai — 195 km, about 4 hours (and Karthigai Deepam on 24 November)

Tiruvannamalai and the Arunachaleswarar Temple make a meaningful festive trip, with Gingee Fort as a stop on the way. The bigger occasion comes two weeks after Deepavali: Karthigai Deepam on Tuesday 24 November 2026, when the Maha Deepam is lit on top of Arunachala hill in the evening. It is one of Tamil Nadu's largest festivals and the town fills with lakhs of pilgrims.
On Karthigai Deepam day, police restrict vehicles near the temple and on the Girivalam path. Expect to park at the edge of town and walk. Arrive the day before, or watch the Maha Deepam from a distance and drive back the next morning rather than leaving with the crowd the same night.
Best Christmas Road Trips from Chennai (25–27 December)
With Christmas on a Friday, you get a clean three-day weekend. By late December the rains are usually easing, which opens up longer coastal drives down ECR toward the delta.
5. Velankanni — about 350 km, 6 to 7 hours

The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni is one of India's most important Christian pilgrimage sites, and Christmas is its busiest season. Families from across Tamil Nadu drive down for the Christmas Eve midnight mass. Take ECR via Pondicherry, Cuddalore and Chidambaram, and break the drive with a stop at the Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram. Book your room in Velankanni or nearby Nagapattinam well in advance — Christmas week sells out.
6. Tranquebar (Tharangambadi) — about 280 km, 5 hours

Tranquebar is the quiet coastal town that most people drive past. The 17th-century Danish Fort Dansborg, colonial streets and an empty beach make it the opposite of a crowded Pondicherry Christmas. It also pairs naturally with Velankanni, about 60 km further south: Tranquebar on the 25th, Velankanni on the 26th, home on the 27th.
Christmas Eve midnight mass at Velankanni draws huge crowds. Park early in the evening at a designated parking area and walk to the Basilica — leaving after midnight with thousands of other cars can take well over an hour.
Best New Year Road Trips from Chennai (31 December – 3 January)
Four days is enough to go further. New Year is the one festive weekend where a long hill drive makes sense — the monsoon is over, the hills are cool and clear, and you have time to drive there without rushing.
7. Yercaud — 360 km, about 6 hours

Yercaud is the closest proper hill station to Chennai: NH48 to Krishnagiri or the Vellore–Salem route, then 20 hairpin bends up from Salem. Coffee estates, Yercaud Lake, Lady's Seat and Pagoda Point make an easy two days, and New Year nights are pleasantly cold. It is busier than usual over New Year but nothing like Ooty.
8. Kodaikanal — 520 km, about 9 hours

Kodaikanal is the big New Year trip — a full day's drive via Trichy and Dindigul, then the ghat road up from Batlagundu. With the 31 December to 3 January window, drive on the 31st, spend the 1st and 2nd at the lake, Coaker's Walk and Pillar Rocks, and drive back on the 3rd. December nights get cold, so pack proper jackets. Do the ghat section in daylight: mist can roll in fast in the evenings.
Prefer the coast? Pondicherry's New Year's Eve on the promenade is the biggest party within driving distance of Chennai — just book your stay early and plan to walk, not drive, that night.

How to Beat Festive Traffic Leaving Chennai
The single biggest factor in how your festive road trip goes is when you leave. On the evening before every long weekend, GST Road through Tambaram, Perungalathur and Vandalur jams up as city traffic meets the flood of outstation buses heading to the Kilambakkam bus terminus. A drive that normally clears the city in 45 minutes can take three hours.
- Leave before 5 AM on the first holiday morning — or after 10 PM the night before if you are comfortable with night driving.
- For Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Tranquebar and Velankanni, take ECR instead of GST Road. It bypasses the worst of the bus traffic.
- For Yelagiri, Yercaud and Tiruvannamalai, head out on NH48 (Poonamallee side) early in the morning to avoid the Sriperumbudur industrial belt traffic.
- Return before 2 PM on the last day. The evening rush back into the city on Sunday of a long weekend is as bad as the Friday exodus.
- Fill fuel and check your FASTag balance before leaving the city — queues at highway fuel stations and toll plazas are longest on festival mornings.
Festive Season Safety Tips for Self Drive
- Deepavali crackers: park away from where crackers are being burst — sparks and rockets can burn paint, tyres and seat covers. Never burst crackers near or on the car.
- Deepavali morning visibility: smoke from crackers can reduce visibility on city roads at dawn. Drive slowly with low beams until you are out of town.
- Monsoon driving: do not drive through water deeper than the middle of the wheel. Avoid low-lying subways in Chennai during heavy rain and keep extra distance on wet roads.
- Ghat roads: Yelagiri, Yercaud and Kodaikanal all have hairpin bends. Use a low gear going downhill instead of riding the brakes, and honk at blind corners.
- New Year's Eve: police run heavy drunk-driving checks across Chennai and on highways, and many city flyovers are usually closed that night. If you are celebrating, do not drive — stay where you party.
- Carry your driving licence, keep the booking details on your phone, and save the 24/7 support number before you leave the city.
