Booking a rental car during peak holiday season is different from booking one for an ordinary weekend. This season, four long weekends land within five weeks — Christmas, New Year, Pongal and Republic Day — and families and friends across Chennai and Bangalore all want a car on the same dates. Popular cars sell out weeks ahead, extensions get harder because cars are booked back to back, and the roads out of the city jam up the evening before every holiday. None of that should stop you from taking the trip. It just means planning a little earlier and a little differently. This guide covers what to know before you book: the dates to plan around, when to book, what sells out first, how cancellations and extensions work, what to sort out before pickup, and how to avoid the worst of the holiday traffic.
The Peak Dates to Plan Around (2026–27)
| Holiday | Dates | Long weekend | Demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas | Fri 25 Dec 2026 | Fri 25 – Sun 27 Dec (4 days with Thu 24 off) | Very high |
| New Year | Fri 1 Jan 2027 | Thu 31 Dec – Sun 3 Jan | Highest of the year |
| Pongal / Sankranti | Bhogi Thu 14 – Kaanum Pongal Sun 17 Jan 2027 | Thu 14 – Sun 17 Jan | Very high in Tamil Nadu |
| Republic Day | Tue 26 Jan 2027 | Sat 23 – Tue 26 Jan with Mon 25 off | High |
Pongal dates can shift by a day depending on the calendar you follow, and holidays differ between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and between employers — confirm your days off before you book. Why Peak Season Is Different
- Everyone wants the same dates. Demand on a long weekend can be several times an ordinary weekend, while the number of cars stays the same.
- Cars are booked back to back. One customer's return is often the next customer's pickup a few hours later, with time only for cleaning and inspection in between.
- The big cars go first. Families and groups travel together at festivals, so 7-seaters are the first to sell out.
- Stays sell out too. Homestays and resorts in Coorg, Pondicherry, Ooty and Kodaikanal fill up weeks ahead — and a car is no use without a room at the other end.
- Roads are at their busiest. The evening before a holiday and the afternoon of the last day are the worst times of the year to be on the highways out of Chennai and Bangalore.
1. Book Early — Stay First, Then the Car

For Christmas and New Year, aim to book four to six weeks ahead. Lock in your accommodation first, because rooms are usually the harder thing to find, then book the car for exactly the same dates. For Pongal and Republic Day, two to four weeks ahead is usually enough, but the best cars still go early. If you are flexible, a morning pickup the day before the holiday is often easier to get than the evening-before slot that everyone wants — and it gets you out of the city ahead of the traffic.
2. Know What Sells Out First
| Car type | How fast it goes | If it is gone |
|---|---|---|
| 7-seaters (Innova Crysta, Fortuner, XUV700) | First — often weeks ahead | Split a large group across two smaller cars |
| Automatic SUVs | Fast | Consider a manual if anyone in the group drives one comfortably |
| Compact SUVs (Creta, Fronx) | Steady | Usually available closer to the date |
| Hatchbacks and sedans | Last | Good option for couples and small families |
Booking for a group of six or seven? Two compact SUVs can be easier to find than one 7-seater in peak week — and give the group more luggage space and more flexibility on the trip.
3. Read the Cancellation Policy Before You Pay
Plans change more often in festival season — leave gets cancelled, someone falls ill, the weather turns. Before you pay, check exactly what you get back if you cancel, and when. Under MM Miles' terms, cancelling more than 24 hours before the trip gets a 90% refund, cancelling within 24 hours gets a 50% refund, and a no-show gets no refund. Avoid booking cars "just in case" — if your plans are uncertain, decide as early as you can and cancel more than 24 hours before the trip.
4. Compare the Final Total, Not the Headline Rate
Some platforms raise prices for weekends and festival dates, and most add GST, fees and trip protection at checkout. Compare the final total for your exact dates on the payment page, not the rate on the search page. Two habits help: book the whole trip in one go rather than separate short bookings, and book for 24 hours or more where you can, because short bookings usually cost more per hour. Our guide on why car rental costs more at checkout explains every line on the bill.
5. Do Not Count on Extending
On an ordinary weekend, adding a few hours to your booking is usually easy. In peak season it often is not, because the car is already booked by someone else straight after you. On MM Miles, extensions are subject to availability and must be approved in advance — and late returns attract charges. Book the full duration you need from the start, including a buffer for the return journey. If you might stay an extra night, it is better to book it and cancel early than to hope for an extension that may not be possible.
A late return in peak season does not just cost you a late fee — it can delay the next family's holiday. Plan to hand the car back on time, and call support as early as possible if you are running late.
6. Get the Pickup Right
- Have your documents ready: a valid driving licence and a government ID such as Aadhaar, passport or PAN. Peak-day handovers run on a tight schedule.
- Confirm the pickup time and address two or three days before, especially if the car is being delivered to your home.
- Be ready at the pickup time — a 30-minute delay at your end can push you into the worst of the departure traffic.
- Walk around the car and take photos or a short video of all four sides, the interior, the odometer and the fuel gauge before you drive off.
- Check the FASTag is active and note the fuel level. MM Miles cars must be returned with the same fuel level they were handed over with.
7. Plan Your Route — and Tell Us About It
Holiday trips often cross state lines — Bangalore to Wayanad or Ooty, Chennai to Pondicherry or Tirupati. Interstate travel in a rental car can involve border permits or entry tax, and some routes have their own rules, such as the night traffic ban through the Bandipur forest between 9 PM and 6 AM. Tell MM Miles your route when you book so you know what applies, and check road conditions the night before — in November and December, rain and fog can close or slow ghat roads.
8. Beat the Holiday Traffic

The single biggest thing you control on a holiday trip is when you leave. In Chennai, GST Road through Tambaram and Vandalur jams on the evening before every long weekend; ECR is usually quicker for trips down the coast. In Bangalore, Tumkur Road to Nelamangala, Mysore Road and Hosur Road near Silk Board are the bottlenecks. Leave before 6 AM on the first holiday morning, or late at night the evening before, and plan to be back in the city before 2 PM on the last day.
9. FASTag, Fuel and Toll Queues

- Check the FASTag is active before you reach the first toll plaza. Toll queues are longest on holiday mornings.
- Fill fuel inside the city before you leave — highway fuel stations get queues on festival days.
- Keep some cash for parking, small entry fees and roadside food in hill stations, where card and UPI coverage can be patchy.
- Download offline maps for ghat sections and forest roads with weak mobile signal.
10. Drive Safe — Holiday Roads Are Different
- Fog and mist are common in December and January on ghat roads to Ooty, Kodaikanal, Coorg and Chikmagalur. Use low beams and avoid driving the ghats after dark.
- Highways are crowded with tired drivers, buses and overloaded vehicles on festival days. Keep your distance and take a break every two hours.
- Police run heavy drunk-driving checks over New Year's Eve. If you are celebrating, do not drive.
- MM Miles' terms set a 120 km/h speed limit for its cars, and breaches attract penalties — on crowded holiday highways you will rarely want to get near it anyway.
- Save the 24/7 support number in your phone before you leave the city.
